What is Asian, Arab and Ethnic Minority (AAEM) History Month?

In April, we shine a spotlight on the cultures, heritages and history of Asian, Arab and other ethnic communities Since there isn’t a single month that covers all of this in the UK, we’ve made April our time to celebrate this rich diversity across our student community. At SUBU, we’re all about making sure everyone is seen, heard and celebrated.

When is AAEM History Month?

We chose to celebrate AAEM History Month in April, as many students observe Ramadan during this month - it’s a meaningful and active time in many communities.

We want to give space for Asian, Arab & ethnic minority voices to shine all month, not just on one day. It’s a chance to explore beyond the usual heritage months and recognise the breadth of our community.

What we’re doing

We’re running a whole range of events throughout April, open to everyone (students from all backgrounds and allies) to join and enjoy. Expect things like:

• Workshops, talks & panels connecting culture, history and student life
• Social & community-events: mixers, celebration evenings, maybe food!
• Creative & performance spaces: art, music, spoken word, cultural displays
• Opportunities to learn, connect, ask questions, and engage
