What is Black History Month (BHM)?

Black History Month is a time to celebrate, reflect and raise awareness of the incredible contributions, stories and culture of Black people.

Here at SUBU, we’re celebrating throughout the month with a programme of events, conversations and creative moments led in collaboration with your Black Students’ Officer, the African and Caribbean Society, Society of Nigerian Students and our Full-Time Officers.

When is Black History Month?

In the UK, Black History Month is celebrated in October - but in North America, it is celebrated in February. The reason for this difference is because when Ghanaian analyst Akyaaba Addai-Sebo looked to set up Black History Month in the UK in the 1980s.

February was already LGBTQ+ History Month, so this, plus the idea that it was early enough in the academic year, schools could focus on teaching Black history without worrying about exams, October was picked as the perfect month.

What we’re doing

Our Black Students’ Officer works alongside students, staff, and community partners to create a lineup of events that represent the diversity and richness of Black culture.

Expect:
• Talks & panels with inspiring speakers, alumni and student voices.
• Cultural events & socials - from live music to film screenings and community gatherings.
• Creative spaces celebrating Black art, photography, writing, and performance.
• Food & culture days bringing people together to experience and share global flavours.
• Opportunities to connect - meet new people, make friends, and celebrate identity together.

At SUBU, we know that while Black History Month is a time where the spotlight is on the Black community and their invaluable contributions to history past and present, it is important to empower and champion our Black students all-year-round and to be an active ally to them too.
