What is Disability History Month (DHM)?

Disability History Month is dedicated to providing a platform for disabled people, the contributions they have made and how the community continues to evolve

Here at SUBU, we create events and awareness campaigns as part of the History Month, which encompasses all members of the Disabilities, Accessibility and Neuro-Diverse Network, as well as allies to the community.

When is Disability History Month?

Nationally, Disability History Month runs from mid-November to mid-December each year. At SUBU, we roll out activity throughout November, so that there’s plenty of time for you to get involved before the festive season!

What we’re doing

Our Disabilities, Accessibility and Neuro-Diverse Officer helps to bring together a full programme of events that celebrate, support and empower disabled students, and encourage all students to engage as allies.

Expect:

• Talks and panels with disabled student voices, expert speakers and ally insights.
• Screenings and workshops that explore disability history, identity, culture and activism.
• Creative sessions including art, writing, performance and display focusing on disability perspectives.
• Community meet-ups, chats and drop-ins where you can connect informally

Who is this for?

Everyone! If you identify as disabled, neuro-diverse, have access needs, or you want to support and learn, these events are for you. /p>

What about the rest of the year?

At SUBU, we know that while Disability History Month is a time where the spotlight is on the disabled and neuro-diverse community and their invaluable contributions to history past and present, it is important to empower and champion our disabled students all-year-round and to be an active ally to them too.
