Community Volunteering Opportunities

Get involved in volunteering. Do good. Feel good. Make your C.V. stand out!

We work with a range of registered UK local and national charities to help find students the right kind of volunteering opportunities. From one off volunteering days to weekly commitments - there is something for everyone, no matter how busy you are!

The charities on our hub know that you are a busy student therefore most roles require between 2 to 4 hours of volunteering per week.  The charities are all lovely and friendly and understand that flexibility is required to fit around your academic time-table - so don't be afraid to ask the charity and agree times that suit you.

Take a look at our current opportunities below and if you see something you like – click the ‘Apply’ button!

If you can’t find an opportunity that suits your interests, book an appointment with the Volunteering team for support: Book a Meeting

Did you know, participating in Volunteering activity with SUBU earns you an Award? By logging your hours and the skills you have gained through your personal volunteering profile you are eligible to earn certificates and download a full breakdown of your volunteering history for your CV!

If you are participating in the BU Graduate Skills Programme, your volunteering will count towards this award too!!!

    Community Kitchen Volunteer

    SUBU Advice

    04 Sep 2025 09:00 - 31 Jul 2027 17:00

Support the SUBU Community Kitchen by helping to upkeep kitchen area, manage student food support by creating pantry packs and managing the stock, taking part in supper clubs while promoting sustainability and student wellbeing through inclusive, community-led initiatives.

The SUBU Community Kitchen designed to support wellbeing, reduce food waste, no judgemental access to food support. As a Community Kitchen Volunteer, you’ll help organise surplus food, assist with pantry organisation, maintain the kitchen and support events that bring students together around food and conversation.

Volunteers play a key role in creating a welcoming, inclusive environment where students can access nutritious meals and connect with others. You’ll work alongside SUBU staff and fellow volunteers to run themed Supper Clubs, food-sharing events, and promotion activities. The kitchen also supplies fresh produce from the SUBU Community Garden, promoting sustainability and healthy living.

This opportunity is ideal for students who want to make a tangible impact on campus, develop practical skills, and contribute to a supportive community. No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to get involved and work as part of a team.

Volunteers will gain experience in food handling, event support, and community engagement, and will be invited to participate in seasonal campaigns and feedback sessions. Your contribution helps reduce food insecurity, build student confidence, and promote positive mental health.

Whether you're passionate about sustainability, cooking, or simply want to meet new people and give back, the Community Kitchen offers a meaningful and flexible way to get involved.

  • Healthwatch Dorset offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities that you can undertake in your own time, from the comfort of your own home, or out in the community ,for example, conducting audits on health and social care premises or gathering feedback abut NHS services We are always on the look out for budding blog writers for our campaigns calendar, and any social media gurus who can help grow our online presence and raise awareness of the Healthwatch Dorset message.

Healthwatch Dorset would like to hear from you! Do you want to get hands on in making a real change to your local NHS health and social care services? We are scouting for volunteers who want to get behind the scenes of these services and gather feedback to ensure the patient voice is heard, because your voice counts.

All volunteering is on an 'ad-hoc' basis depending on the projects that coincide with Healthwatch Dorset's work plan, and the enquiries we receive. This means we can adapt any volunteering to fit around YOUR work/life/study balance. We combine the virtual and physical aspects of our roles to put the volunteers first and suit YOUR needs. We don’t require a dedicated slot every week for you to volunteer your time, just a passion to give back and get involved with our projects as they come up, to make real change happen.

Past projects have included gathering views and offering recommendations in Poole A&E department, carrying out ‘mystery shopper’ assignments in surgeries to ensure correct and consistent information is being given about NHS health checks, and entering local hospitals across Dorset to check the quality of the environment to ensure patient experience is as comfortable as possible.

Raising awareness of the Healthwatch Dorset service is just as vital, and we need volunteers to help spread the word through their social networks, at events with our promotional stand, attending meetings across the county, and for the tech savvy; helping with our social media channels.

Sound like something you want to get involved in? Do you like being active and hands on? How about talking to the public about their health and social care needs, in order to make a real difference? Perhaps you had a great experience, and want to protect the NHS? Or you had a bad experience which you want to make right, so that it doesn’t happen again?
